Week One

I’ve finished my first “week” of grad school and by week I mean one day of class. Monday, my classes didn’t start like the rest of the Kent State students, so I was at the Adam Lambert concert in Covington, Kentucky (which was FANTASTIC, might I add). Tuesday, I packed up some clothes, my laptop, some movies and anything else I needed and headed up to my cousin’s place where I’ll be staying until I can find an apartment. That same night, I went to my Foundations of Library & Information Science class. The class is going to be mostly done online even though I thought it was a regular class. Not that I’m complaining, it’s a three hour long class and goes until about ten at night.

I’m not sure if my classes will always be like this, but I can live with this schedule. It also gives me plenty of time to work, maybe even taking a full time position. Right now, I’m trying to find an apartment in the area. More to come!

It’s Guy Love

This isn’t really related to being a MLIS student, because honestly, there hasn’t been much on that front lately. Though, it does involve books, hooray! Recently, I asked my friend, Eiluned, about contributing to her awesome blog, The Discriminating Fangirl, by reviewing male/male romance novels and she gladly accepted. I’ve ordered my first two books, Z.A. Maxfield’s Notturno and Mychael Black’s Realms of Fantasy. GoodReads has a fantastic M/M romance group with loads of suggestions, so my “to read” list has grown quite a bit in the past few days. A few of the authors, Black included, are even members of the group. If you like all things nerdy, I suggest checking out The Discriminating Fangirl and you’ll see reviews from me pop up from time to time.

The Letter

*holds breath*

In late March, after wondering if I should just start looking for office work in Dayton or Cincinnati, I received a letter from Kent State. Due to its size and width, I braced myself for the worst, completely expecting to read the words “We regret to inform you…”. However, when I opened the tri-fold paper, I was pleasantly surprised to find a congratulatory paragraph and information on accessing my campus email account.

Reading being an important aspect in librarianship, I managed to read over the information on the program’s website that said the graduate assistantship application was due by April 1, I had two days to fill it out, type up a resumé and get it mailed. My printer was out of ink, so I got up early and went to the store to buy some, and grab some coffee from the drive thru while I was at it.

Unfortunately, when I got back home, I found the power out for no apparent reason. Why not just go pay to print at a library? Well, I had just shelled out $30 for the printer ink and wasn’t sure how much an overnight shipping would cost me, so I decided to wait. About two very long hours later, the power was back on and seemed to be staying on (there were a few false starts during that time), so I got on my desktop and printed off the application and my resumé before stuffing them (neatly) into an envelope and running up to the post office. There isn’t any guarantee that they haven’t filled the position already, I did come in pretty late, but I’m still hoping to grab one of the 10-11 positions. Full tuition remission and a stipend would make life much easier.
